There are other sources of photos than Pixabay, but we currently recommend Pixabay because all the photos there are completely copyright free and attribution free. If you find photos elsewhere, please pay very close attention to:
- copyright, whether Lingopolo is allowed to use them at all
- attribution requirements, whether Lingopolo has to specifically acknowledge where the specific photo comes from. Currently we don't do this, so if we have to acknowledge photo by photo the source, this is a problem
StockSnap.io
StockSnap is another great source of completely copyright-free images. Be careful not to use the sponsored images (marked with a star and labelled as "sponsored"), as these are paid and not copyright free.
Visual Hunt
Visual Hunt is another great source of 100% Free High Quality Photos.
A few things on this site:
- All the photos are valid for use by Lingopolo
- By default they propose to download the smallest size; it is better to always download the largest size, so that we can more easily crop just the part of the photo we want to use
- It's a little bit fiddly to get the URL for use as the image source, since it's not the URL of the page, and it's embedded within a block of credit text (we only need the URL link)
Unsplash
Unsplash is a great source of free high-resolution photos. They are free. They do not require attribution. So this site can be used in as relaxed way as Pixabay.
Google Images
You can also look for photos on Google Images. It is very important that you only search for images which are "Labeled for reuse with modification", or "Labeled for noncommercial reuse with modification".
If you find and use a copyright image, then this could cause big problems for Lingopolo, so please be very careful about this.
Unless you know what you are doing and check the licence conditions of any photo you find carefully, it is better to just stick to Pixabay or Unsplash.
