Now they realized that she was a real princess, because she had felt the pea through the twenty mattresses and twenty feather-down quilts. Nu merkten zij, dat zij een echte prinses was, omdat zij door de twintig matrassen en de twintig donzen bedden heen de erwt gevoeld had.
But she said nothing, went to the bedroom, lifted up all the bedding up, and laid down a pea on the bed base; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty more feather-down quilts on the mattresses. Maar ze zei niets, ging naar de slaapkamer, lichtte alle bedden op en legde een erwt op de onderlagen van het ledekant neer; daarop nam zij twintig matrassen en legde deze op de erwt, en toen nog twintig donzen bedden op de matrassen.
One evening a strong thunderstorm came; there was thunder and lighting, the rain was pouring down, it was terrible weather! Op zekeren avond kwam er een geducht onweer opzetten; het lichtte en donderde, de regen viel bij stroomen neer, het was een verschrikkelijk weer!
The water dripped from her hair and clothes; it went in at the toes of her shoes and went out again at the heels. Het water droop haar uit het haar en de kleren; het liep er bij de neuzen van haar schoenen in en bij de hakken weer uit.
Now the prince took her to be his wife; because now he knew that he had a real princess, and the pea was placed in the cabinet of rarities, in which it can still be seen, if at least no one has stolen it. Nu nam de prins haar tot vrouw; want nu wist hij, dat hij een echte prinses bezat, en de erwt kwam in het kabinet van zeldzaamheden, waarin zij nog te zien is, als niemand haar ten minste gestolen heeft.
